Tim Cook: But Seriously, Why Would Anyone Buy A PC Anymore?

  • Is the PC dead? If it isn't already, Apple Inc. AAPL's CEO Tim Cook wants to lay it to rest.
  • Cook, promoting Apple's new iPad Pro, questioned why anyone would still buy a PC in today's market.
  • The launch of the new iPad device follows the company's fourth quarter results where sales of iPad devices fell to 9.9 million units from 12.3 million units in the same quarter a year ago.

Apple's large-screen iPad Pro is the one device that could finally kill the PC market for good, at least according to the company's CEO Tim Cook.

"Why would you buy a PC anymore?," Cook said in Britain while promoting the launch of the device. "No really, why would you buy one?"

Cook, speaking to the UK-based Telegraph, said that the iPad Pro is a "replacement for a notebook or a desktop for many, many people." He added that users will fall in love with the device to the point where they no longer need to use any other device, except their phones.

Cook also pointed out that while the iPad Pro is a tremendous productivity tool for the enterprise and business market, it is also a great entertainment device for listening to music, reading books or watching movies.

The iPad Pro is Apple's most expensive device yet and will be launched in the UK for £679 (~$1,026) and up. Cook dismissed the idea of following some of its peers and offering a low-end, cheaper device at a time when sales of iPad devices are declining year-over-year.

Apple reported that it sold 9.9 million iPad devices in its most recent quarter, marking a decrease from the 12.3 million it sold in the same quarter a year ago.

Speaking to another UK-based publication, Independent, the executive said Apple's philosophy remains the same and the company isn't interested in "making the most," rather the company is focused on "making the best."

"I think it will attract a lot of PC users and people who are not currently using Apple products," Cook said. "And I think it will be a reason for people to upgrade who love iPad and who have been waiting for something very different and now here it is."
