It shouldn't come as a surprise that an app by either Facebook Inc FB or Alphabet Inc GOOG will hold the title of the most popular mobile app.
However, it might be a surprise to some that Facebook and Google combined for the top eight spots among the 10 most popular mobile apps, according to a report by Cnet.
Cnet, citing Nielsen data, noted that Facebook's core-Facebook app "by far, outranked" any other app in the US with 126.7 million unique users on average throughout most of 2015.
The second-most popular app was YouTube with an average of 97.6 million users each month.
Facebook's Messenger app ranked as the third-most popular app and Google accounted for the following four spots with its search app, Google Play, Google Maps and Gmail.
Facebook's Instagram app held on to the 8th spot.
Apple Inc. AAPL's Music app ranked 9th and its Maps app closed the top 10 list.
