Semiconductor shares moved up, leading the tech sector advance. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) surged about 3.1%. The top gainers in the list were Nvidia Corp NVDA, KLA-Tencor KLAC, Cabot Microelectronics CCMP and Brooks Automation BRKS. Shares of Jos. A. Bank Clothiers JOSB dropped about 5.4% after the company reported weaker-than-expected Q3 profit. JOSB posted its earnings at $0.45 per share, versus $0.42 per share, in the year-ago period. The company's revenue increased 7.4% y/y to $173.3 million. However, analysts were expecting $0.50 per share on revenue of $177.89 million. The US dollar dropped after healthy global manufacturing and employment data. Against the greenback, the euro gained 1.1168% to $1.3135, compared to $1.2986 in late North American trade Tuesday. The dollar index (DXY) lost about 0.6%. Shares of Eurand NV EURX jumped about 8.1% after the company agreed to be acquired by Axcan Holdings Inc for around $583 million, or $12 per share in cash, representing a 9.4% premium to EURX's closing price on Tuesday. The deal is likely to close in the second quarter of 2011. "After an extended auction process, and in conjunction with its independent financial and legal advisors, the Board of Directors has concluded that this agreement is in the best interests of our shareholders and other stakeholders," said Angelo C Malahias, Chairman of EURX's Special Committee consisting of the Independent Directors.
