Small-Cap Rally Continues This Week

Contrary to what I expected, on Monday my 40 best ZR#1 Small Caps rallied 0.89% and my total pack of 293 Small Caps did 0.45%, practically twice as good as the S&P500 (0.25%) indicating a continuation rather than a consolidation of last week's Small Caps rally of already 0.9%. There was indeed some profit taking on my 162 Mid Caps (-0.25%) with no action on my Large Caps, leaving my P&P500 -0.05% (-30 points) behind the S&P500.

My own 24 Small Caps did wonderful (2.5%) although I “only” made 1% real life due to large slippages. I tend to buy the stocks that open with a large gap at market close.

There has been a lot of talk about Gold, Silver and Non-Ferrous Mining. I designed a strategy of the 12 best of this pack selecting only the ones with a Market Cap in excess of $300 Million. Presently, there are about 45 of those mining companies in Zacks' Dbase, but back in 2000 there were only 7. The total pack compounded 23%/year since December 1999. Its real “explosive rally” came from March 2009 onwards, compounding 83%/year.

During that relatively short period of time, the number of mining companies in my pack grew from 30 to 45, by 50%! If I select the 12 best of those, these rallied 145%/year since March 2009, YTD 105%. Nothing to be ashamed of. Yesterday, Paramount Gold & Silver (PZG), a Gold miner was the best in this mining pack and did 16.8%. The worst performer was International Tower Hill (THM) with -1.9%.
