Boehner Asked To Reconsider Repeal Health Care Reform

Now that he's the Speaker of the House, officials are asking John Boehner to reconsider repealing health care reform. White House officials have said that repealing it would put the country back on the course of skyrocketing healthcare costs. The House is planning a symbolic vote next week, but U.S. Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner urged Boehner to think about it before doing anything. "We urge you to consider all that this law has already done ... as you evaluate any proposal that would set the Nation back on a path to higher costs and skyrocketing premiums, less competition, and fewer consumer protections against industry abuses," they, along with Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, wrote in a letter. Boehner and Republicans won the majority of the House due to campaign promises of "repeal and replace" the healthcare law passed in March. Since Democrats still control the Senate, there is little chance the law would be repealed. President Obama would veto it, should it even get that far. Republicans most likely would hold investigations to try to delay the law. The bill would extend health insurance coverage to 30 million Americans, and put forth new rules on health insurance companies such as Aetna Inc AET and WellPoint Inc. WLP.
