Bill Campbell, a major figure in shaping Silicon Valley, died on Monday.
Campbell is perhaps best known for his work at Apple Inc. AAPL. He joined the company in 1983 as vice president of marketing and served as a member of the Board of Directors from 1997 to 2014 following brief stints at other technology firms.
Campbell was the longest-tenured director in Apple's history.
He also played pivotal roles in other high tech companies where he earned the title of "the coach." Google's Larry Page and Eric Schmidt, along with Amazon's Jeff Bezos both sought Campbell's advice and counsel.
Re/code noted that Ben Horowitz, a major Silicon Valley investor, featured Campbell in his book "The Hard Things About Hard Things." Another major Silicon Valley investor, John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins, said that Campbell acted as a key adviser.
Campbell also coached college football at Columbia University.
He succumbed to cancer at the age of 75.
