Twitter Is About To Make 140 Characters A Lot Easier

Tired of worrying about fitting 140 characters into a tweet? Twitter Inc TWTR might be finally listening to your demands.

"Twitter will soon stop counting photos and links in their 140-character limit for tweets," a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. "The change could happen in the next two weeks, said the person who asked not to be named because the decision isn't yet public.

Links currently take up 23 characters.

"Twitter's 140-character limit was originally adopted because it was a way to send Tweets while fitting all the information within a mobile text message -- a common way for sending Tweets when the service debuted in 2006, before the proliferation of smartphones," Bloomberg noted.

Back in January, it was announced Twitter was considering building a new feature that would expand a tweet's character limit to 10,000. Recode noted then that Twitter's Direct Messages product already has a 10,000 character limit, making a potential expansion of the Tweet limit not a complete surprise.

Twitter has been looking for ways to grow its user base, as investors wait for the company to better monetize itself. The stock has fallen from the $40 level to under $20 over the past year.

The stock traded recently at $14.29, up 1.3 percent on the day.
