Bernanke Says Fed Must Stay Politically Neutral

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke spoke to the National Press Club today. His main points were that the United States had to prevent default on its default, and in fact, even the hint of defaulting, and that the Federal Reserve must stay independent. Bernanke stated that all evidence has shown that independent central banks are better able to keep inflation in-check and are more stable. He said that the entire Federal Reserve board is behind this sentiment and he feels that all Reserve board members in the past would likely agree as well. Healthcare providers like Unitd Health UNH and Humana HUM are popping on Bernanke's comments today. Shares of both companies hit levels over 4.5% higher than yesterday's close on heavy intraday trading volume.
