ETF Deathwatch for February 2011: 14 New Names

Fourteen new names are being added to ETF Deathwatch for February and five removed.  The total list increases by nine to 152, consisting of 114 ETFs and 38 ETNs.  This is only the third time in the past 20 months the total quantity has exceeded 150.  The average fund on the list has just $6.8 million in assets, while being 28.8 months old.  One has to wonder how much longer the sponsors can continue to operate these funds at a loss.

All new product launches are given a 6-month grace period (immunity) in which to gain traction with investors before they are considered for ETF Deathwatch.  The 23 products launched in July 2010 are now eligible for inclusion, and 13 of them received that dubious honor.

We are using new ETF Deathwatch criteria for 2011, and one of the intentions is to help stabilize the constituents from month to month.  It seems to be accomplishing that goal with only six changes to this month's list not related to funds exiting the 6-month grace period.

Barclays ETN+ S&P 500 2x Short C 2009 ETN (BXDC) was added as assets dropped to less than $4 million, even though trading activity is quite high.  Five funds escaped the grip of ETF Deathwatch and were removed this month.  The turmoil in Egypt helped Market Vectors Gulf States (MES) as well as Market Vectors Egypt Index ETF (EGPT) increase assets and trading.  The other three funds showing enough improvement to be removed were iShares S&P Global Nuclear Energy (NUCL), PowerShares Dynamic Financials (PFI), and UBS E-TRACS CMCI Food TR ETN (FUD).
