Move Over Spotify? Amazon Toying With $5 A Month Streaming Music Subscription Offering

Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN is considering launching a streaming music service exclusively available for owners of its Echo hardware device or phone for just $4 or $5 a month.

According to Recode, Amazon will also offer the same streaming service across any device for the industry-standard $10 a month.

Recode, citing "industry sources," noted that Amazon could launch the service as soon as September, but it hasn't yet finalized working out contract details with the major music labels and publishers.

Amazon's $10 a month package contains all of the features that Spotify and other music streaming platforms already offer. Specifically, unlimited ad-free usage across any device and the ability to download albums and playlists for offline use.

On the other hand, the $5 exclusive package for Echo owners "runs counter to conventional wisdom" in which music listeners "value the ability to take their music with them and play it whenever they want." Naturally, Echo owners find it unfeasible, if not impossible to carry around the device with them throughout their day to day tasks.

Recode also noted that Amazon already offers a music service for Prime members, but it does a limited catalog of music.
