Horace Mann Educators Corporation HMN today reported net income of $15.2 million (36 cents per share) and $80.9 million ($1.97 per share) for the three and twelve months ended December 31, 2010, compared to $22.2 million (54 cents per share) and $73.5 million ($1.81 per share) for the same periods in 2009.
Included in net income were net realized losses on securities of $1.5 million ($0.9 million after tax, or 3 cents per share) for the fourth quarter of 2010 and realized gains of $23.8 million ($15.4 million after tax, or 37 cents per share) for the full year.
In the same periods in 2009, net income included net realized investment gains of $4.6 million ($3.2 million after tax, or 7 cents per share) and $26.3 million ($17.2 million after tax, or 42 cents per share), respectively. All per-share amounts are stated on a diluted basis.
