According to a Bloomberg report, the central bank wasn't brought up in prior presidential debates, despite Main Street's ill contempt with the Fed dating back to the 2008 crisis. Trump may have tapped into Main Street's public anger by bringing up the Fed and by doing so he is now playing politics and challenging its legitimacy.
"We are in a very big, ugly bubble," Trump said. "The Fed is not doing its job. The Fed is being more political than Secretary Clinton."
Bloomberg noted that the new spotlight for the Fed is a concern since the Fed answers to Congress, which is "sensitive to public opinion."
The Federal Reserve passed on raising interest rates so far this year for a variety of reasons. However, Trump argued the central bank is waiting until President Obama's term is over before it raises interest rates.
"The day Obama goes off and he leaves and he goes off to the golf course for the rest of his life to play golf, when they raise interest rates, you're going to see some very bad things happen," Trump said.
Whether or not Trump has any merit to his claim isn't of importance. As noted by Bloomberg, the fact that millions of Americans don't follow the Fed on a regular basis were now exposed to the independent institution that doesn't answer to the president in a negative light.
