SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

InTouch Health, the leading specialty telehealth enterprise network provider, today announced it has surpassed 800,000 clinical teleconsultations, the first telehealth company to deliver high acuity and life-saving care, performed over the InTouch network and enterprise solution platform. InTouch network customers have reported specialist productivity doubled, patient access increased by a factor of 16, treatment rates quadrupled and treatment speed increased by up to six times. In addition, InTouch this month celebrates a significant milestone in the evolution of telemedicine with the 15th anniversary of the Lindbergh operation, the world's first complete telesurgery procedure.

"Our vision for telemedicine is to enable a high-quality trusted relationship between a doctor and patient to favorably transform healthcare delivery. At InTouch, we are leading the way in these efforts as the first to conduct 800,000 high acuity clinical teleconsultations using our telehealth enterprise network and solutions," said Yulun Wang, Ph.D., Founder, Chairman and Chief Innovation Officer of InTouch Health. "With the Lindbergh operation, we realized the value of projecting human perception and dexterity at a distance. This concept was the inspiration for InTouch Health, where we have created a telehealth platform to enable a trusting physician-patient care experience for integrated care delivery across the continuum."

The transatlantic Lindbergh operation – named after American aviator, Charles Lindbergh, who was the first to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean – was a collaboration led by IRCAD (Institute for Research into Cancer of the Digestive System) and Computer Motion (now part of Intuitive Surgical, Inc. ISRG), a company founded by Dr. Wang.

On September 7, 2001, Professor Jacques Marescaux, MD, President and Founder of IRCAD, seated at a surgeon console located in a telecommunications office in downtown Manhattan, NY, remotely controlled a Computer Motion surgical robotic system, via a secure and reliable high-speed Internet connection, to perform a cholecystectomy on a 68 year-old patient located at Strasbourg Civil Hospital in Strasbourg, France. The procedure was successfully and safely completed in less than one hour.

Prof. Marescaux said, "The ability to perform a successful tele-collaborative surgery from thousands of miles away is perhaps one of the most significant historic milestones in the evolution of telemedicine, made possible with the revolutionary assistance of Computer Motion's surgical robotic system. When one reflects on the Lindbergh operation, it was a monumental time of opportunity. Computer-assisted surgery is now used across multiple surgical disciplines to bring about improved patient outcomes. Telemedicine is addressing an imbalance of resources by allowing patients to have greater access to high quality specialist care universally at lowered costs."
