After signing a deal with the UK government to encourage responsible drinking, Heineken HINKF has announced that it will cut the alcohol content of one of its major brands. Heineken currently makes Heineken, Forster's, John Smith's and Kronenbourg, but has not announced which brand will be affected by the changes.
Several companies are joining up with the UK government's ‘responsibility deal.' This deal is a movement to help consumers make better decisions by making them more informed and providing healthier and more responsible options. In addition to better labeling, the deal pushes for responsible drinking. The UK government will be working with Addaction, a drug and alcohol treatment charity, to decide how to best use funds.
Care services minister Paul Burstow stated that Heineken's move is a “breakthrough for the coalition's voluntary approach in getting business to change their approach and improve the public's health."
