The Nikkei 225 index of Japanese stocks surged 401.57 points, or 4.36%, higher to 9,608.32, with a daily high of 9,625.03. The Nikkei led most of the Asian stock markets higher, with the Hang Seng Index of Hong Kong traded stocks up 172.68 points, or 0.76%, to 22,857.90 and the Korea Composite Stock Price Index, or the KOSPI, up 10.24 points, or 0.51%, to 2,013.66.
