Stocks trade mixed in morning trading, putting three-day rally at risk

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks were mixed in morning trading Tuesday following a strong three-day rally.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 2 points to 12,039. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped less than a point to 1,298. The Nasdaq composite index fell less than a point to 2,692.

A day with such little change for stocks has been rare so far in March. The Dow Jones industrial average has moved up or down by at least 100 points in four of the last five trading days. The last three days have all been up for stocks, including Monday's 178-point gain in the Dow. Developments in Japan's nuclear crisis and the violence in Libya have been driving the volatility.

Crude oil prices, a major source of concern since mid-February, dipped below $103 per barrel.
