Chevron CVX, the second-largest U.S. oil company, and Apache APA, the largest U.S. independent oil and natural gas producer, have both halted operations in Australia due to Tropical Cyclone Carlos. California-based Chevron has suspended construction work at the $43 billion Gorgon gas field and Texas-based Apache stopped gas production from Varanus Island. Carlos is a Category 2 cyclone that a week ago struck the city of Darwin, more than 1,800 kilometers (1,150 miles) to the northeast of the Gorgon site on Barrow Island, according to Bloomberg News. Apache said production will resume when weather permits. Chevron suspended construction at Gorgon on Tuesday. The company has said the project is one of its cornerstones for global growth in the coming years. Exxon Mobil XOM and Royal Dutch Shell RDS, the largest U.S. and European oil companies, partner with Chevron on the project. Woodside Petroleum, Australia's second-largest oil and gas producer, has also suspended various operations in the country due to foul weather.
