Amazon To Offer Discounted Prime Benefits To Those Receiving Government Assistance

Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN took steps Tuesday to expand membership opportunities to lower-income communities.

Now, customers with verified Electronic Benefits Transfer cards qualify to receive Prime benefits for $5.99 per month, which will improve access to Amazon’s online marketplace and arts entertainment cache. Members will have free same-day delivery, product discounts, free monthly books on Kindle First, Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading and Prime Photos.

The discount will support those participating in EBT government assistance programs, such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families; Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program; and other state-based programs. Amazon plans to expand the opportunity to participants receiving non-EBT government assistance in the future.

The discounted rate is available for one-year service terms renewable up to four times, and while EBT confirms eligibility, the cards cannot be used to pay for Prime.

The company has taken calculated measures recently to advance social justice. Tuesday’s announcement came nearly a month after Amazon confirmed it would donate more than 75,000 square feet of its new Seattle building to a local homeless shelter.
