Trump Brushes Off Third Indictment, Dominates Republican Field By 43 Points In 2024 Election Poll

Zinger Key Points
  • In a poll of Republican voters, Donald Trump has a 43-point lead for a third straight week.
  • Vivek Ramaswamy continues to see gains in multiple categories among Republican voters.

An updated weekly poll shows the continued dominance of Republican front-runner Donald Trump against a crowded field of contenders fighting to win the GOP nomination for the 2024 presidential election.

What Happened: Despite having a third indictment announced and multiple court cases, Trump continues to see strong support from Republican voters.

The latest weekly election poll of Republican voters by Morning Consult shows Trump with a 43-point lead for the third straight week.

Here’s a look at who Republican voters would vote for today, with the previous percentage from last week in parentheses.

Donald Trump: 59% (58%)

Ron DeSantis: 16% (15%)

Vivek Ramaswamy: 8% (9%)

Mike Pence: 6% (7%)

Nikki Haley: 3% (3%)

Tim Scott: 3% (3%)

Chris Christie: 3% (3%)

After leads of 35 points and 38 points in prior weeks, Trump has now shows a commanding 43-point lead for three straight weeks.

DeSantis gained one percentage point from the prior week, which could be good news given he had hit new record lows since polling began in December 2022 for two straight weeks.

Ramaswamy comes in third place for a fourth straight week after passing Pence several weeks back. The pharmaceutical entrepreneur sees support at 8%, dipping one percentage point from the previous week.

Why It’s Important: Despite losing one percentage point, Ramaswamy continues to track well when looking at the data.

Among voters who select Trump first, 35% chose DeSantis as their next selection, while Ramaswamy was selected by 22%. Last week’s poll saw 33% select DeSantis and 20% select Ramaswamy.

Of voters who select DeSantis first, 42% select Trump as their next selection, 19% select Ramaswamy and 13% select Trump. In the prior week, 37% selected Trump, 16% selected Pence and 15% selected Ramaswamy.

The favorability rating for Ramaswamy is 56%, up from 48% in the previous week. The unfavorable rating of 13% for Ramaswamy is the lowest of all candidates surveyed for the week.

Ramaswamy, who saw his social media following go up after a Twitter/X Spaces hosted by Elon Musk and David Sacks, saw more people say they know who he is and have a view one way or another of him ahead of the 2024 election.

Ramaswamy also ranked first for voters surveyed on if they had heard something positive about a candidate at 36%.

Despite a third indictment, Trump saw his favorability rating increase from 71% in the prior poll to 81%, ranking significantly higher than second place DeSantis at 69%. The unfavorable rating for Trump of 17% also fell from 26% in the last survey.

The 81% favorable rating for Trump ties for his highest result since the 2022 midterm elections, set in April 2023.

The indictment likely led to an increase in the question of if voters had read something negative or positive about a candidate. More people said they had heard something negative about Trump than something positive at 49% and 33%, respectively.
