Former President Donald Trump has been one of the leading candidates to win the GOP nomination and go up against the Democratic candidate, likely to be current President Joe Biden, in the 2024 election.
A new survey showed Trump’s supporters have huge trust in Trump.
What Happened: Trump has dominated most election polls among Republican voters, with the latest Morning Consult poll showing a 44-point lead against his GOP competition.
A recent CBS/YouGov poll revealed Trump has a strong lead over the competition and what his supporters think of indictments, the top reasons to support him and how much trust they have in the former president over other people.
The CBS/YouGov poll shows voters would select the following as their Republican presidential candidate today:
- Donald Trump: 62%
- Ron DeSantis: 16%
- Vivek Ramaswamy: 7%
- Mike Pence: 5%
- Tim Scott: 3%
- Nikki Haley: 2%
- Chris Christie: 2%
- Doug Burgum: 1%
- Asa Hutchinson: 1%
Trump saw a 46-point lead in the latest CBS/YouGov poll, which is one of the highest in national polls.
Along with the commanding lead, the poll also found that 77% of voters think Trump’s indictments are politically motivated and only 8% believe Trump tried to overturn the presidential election. Fifteen percent of those polled said it was a combination of both elements.
When asked for the top reasons they support Trump, voters answered the following, with multiple answers allowed:
Things were better under Trump: 99%
Fights for people like me: 95%
Knew him better than other candidates: 76%
Always been a supporter: 74%
Voters were also asked for the top reasons why they weren’t supporting Trump, which saw the following answers, with multiple choices allowed:
Keeping options open: 68%
Waiting to see debate: 47%
Trump is controversial: 42%
Concern over Trump’s legal fights: 36%
Of the voters polled who said that honesty is very important among candidates, 61% support Trump. The poll also found that Trump is highly trusted among supporters. When asked if they felt what is being told to them by various people is true, voters answered yes to the following:
Donald Trump: 71%
Friends and Family: 63%
Conservative Media Figures: 56%
Religious Leaders: 42%
Those polled were more likely to trust what Trump said than that of their own friends, family and church leaders.

What’s Next: The first Republican primary debate is set for Wednesday, Aug. 23 at 9 p.m. ET.
After months of hinting that he would sit out the first debate, Trump has said that he will not be taking part.
The first debate among Republican presidential candidates will air on Fox News, a unit of Fox Corporation FOXFOXA and will also be streamed on Rumble Inc RUM.
Fox and Rumble also landed the rights to the second Republican primary debate, set for Sept. 27, with Fox choosing to air the next event on its Fox Business channel.
With Trump not participating, a recent poll predicted that DeSantis and Ramaswamy could emerge as the winners of the debate and potentially gain the most in future polls.
One big question ahead of the debate is how much the candidates will choose to talk about Trump with him not being present.
The CBS/YouGov poll found 91% of voters thought Trump’s opponents should be making the case to voters for themselves and 9% said the other candidates should be making the case against Trump.
Another reason for Trump's support could be the belief that he has a better chance of beating Biden in a national election. Of those polled, 61% said they believed Trump could beat Biden. Only 35% said they thought DeSantis could beat Biden, down from 50% in the same poll in June.
