Trump Mug Shot Goes Viral, Former President Gains On Biden In Polls

  • A look at results of Biden vs. Trump and Biden Vs. DeSantis in the latest polls.

The 2024 presidential election could end up being a rematch of the 2020 election, which saw voters choose between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Currently serving as the 46th president, Biden defeated Trump in the 2020 election.

Here’s a look at what a weekly poll says about a potential rematch and how Biden matches up in a hypothetical match-up versus Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

What Happened: A national poll of registered voters highlighted two hypothetical matchups for the 2024 election between Biden, Trump and DeSantis. The three candidates have been considered the frontrunners in the 2024 presidential election race.

The weekly Morning Consult poll had Biden defeating both Trump and DeSantis in separate hypothetical matchups, proposed to registered voters.

Voters gave Biden a 43% to 42% advantage against Trump in the latest hypothetical matchup. This marks a gain of one percentage point from the previous three weeks for Trump. Ten percent said they would vote for someone else and 5% said they were unsure who they would select.

The gain for Trump came as he continued to dominate Republican voter polls with a 44-point lead over the competition in a Morning Consult poll. Trump has also gained despite a fourth indictment and skipping out on the first Republican debate, which aired on Fox Corporation FOXFOXA unit Fox News and livestreamed on Rumble Inc RUM.

In a matchup between Biden and DeSantis, Biden wins with a 43% to 39% advantage. Twelve percent said they would vote for someone else and 7% said they were unsure who they would vote for. This marks an improvement for DeSantis who had only 37% of the vote in last week’s poll.

DeSantis had been dropping against Biden in the poll, which mirrored his results in the Republican presidential candidate polls that have seen his support continue to fall compared to Trump.

A Morning Consult poll in June saw Trump take a brief 44% to 41% lead over Biden, which was his first lead since the poll began in December 2022.

Outside of the one poll that saw Trump pass Biden, the current president has maintained a lead of mostly one to two points over Trump.

A separate Morning Consult poll saw Trump gain when asked among GOP voters who has the best chance to beat Biden in a head-to-head matchup.

Trump was favored by 62% of voters, which was up nine points from the previous week and tied a poll high since tracking began in April. DeSantis received only 13% in the poll and Vivek Ramaswamy ranked third with 6%.

The former president surrendered in Georgia for charges related to interfering with the 2020 election. A mugshot of Trump was released on Aug. 24 and quickly went viral across social media. A potential rallying cry for supporters, Trump shared the mug shot on Twitter, his first post on the platform since January 2021.

Why It’s Important: The 2020 election saw Biden defeat Trump with a 306 to 232 margin in the Electoral College. Biden also won the popular vote with 51.3% support, compared to 46.9% for Trump.

Trump continued to dominate the GOP field in recent polls, with the latest Morning Consult poll showing a 44-point lead for the former president over the Republican competition. DeSantis also saw his support level drop in recent weeks, nearing new lows at 14% in the most recent poll.

The latest polling came as Trump was charged in connection to his alleged attempts to reverse the 2020 Presidential election outcome. The former president was indicted four times in 2023.
