  • Donald Trump continues to dominate the Republican presidential poll from Morning Consult.
  • Trump did see support take a slight dip and his margin narrowed.

Former President Donald Trump has dominated election polls for months as he works to secure the GOP nomination for the 2024 presidential election.

A new weekly election poll highlights Trump's sustained lead, with another candidate on the rise.

What Happened: Trump has had a year full of news with multiple indictments and federal charges. The former president also chose to sit out the first Republican primary debate.

Despite these developments, Trump's backing from Republican voters remains steadfast, positioning him as the odds-on favorite to win the 2024 GOP nomination, barring any future setbacks or surges from rival opponents.

The latest Morning Consult poll of GOP voters showed Trump lost support and saw his lead diminish, but it remains above the 40-point level, where it has consistently been for months.

Here’s a look at who Republican voters would vote for today, with the percentage from last week in parentheses.

  • Donald Trump: 57% (60%)
  • Ron DeSantis: 14% (15%)
  • Vivek Ramaswamy: 9% (8%)
  • Nikki Haley: 6% (5%)
  • Chris Christie: 3% (3%)
  • Tim Scott: 2% (2%)

In the latest poll, Trump has a 43-point lead, falling from last week’s 45-point lead. The 43-point lead is the lowest lead for Trump over the last four weeks.

Why It’s Important:Both Trump and DeSantis experienced a dip in support from the previous week's poll. Meanwhile, candidates Haley and Ramaswamy each gained a point, adding to their consistent growth in recent months.

Haley had around 3% support before the first Republican debate. A survey found Haley as one of the potential winners of the debate among those polled. Haley's support at 6% marks her highest since the initial surge following her campaign launch in February 2023.

The latest Morning Consult poll showed six candidates with 3% or more in support, which will be a key figure to watch. Candidates need to have 3% support among GOP voters in two national surveys ahead of the next Republican primary debate.

A second Republican primary debate will be held on Sept. 27 and air on Fox Corporation FOXFOXA unit Fox Business and will livestream on Rumble Inc RUM.

Among voters who selected Trump first, 34% chose DeSantis as their next selection, while Ramaswamy was selected by 27% and Pence by 9%. This marked a shift as last week’s poll saw 36% select DeSantis, 21% select Ramaswamy and 11% select Pence.

Of voters who supported DeSantis, 37% selected Trump as their next selection and 17% selected Ramaswamy.

Trump maintained his top position in the poll with a favorability score of 76%, consistent with his performance over the last three weeks. DeSantis, on the other hand, added one point for the second consecutive week, reaching a favorability of 65%.

After a dip from 59% to 53% in the prior poll, Ramaswamy rebounded to a favorability of 58%. His unfavorable rating of 19% ranks as one of the lowest, and his net favorable rating of 39 is among the highest.

Ramaswamy also led the way again for candidates who voters heard something positive about at 43%.

Haley saw her favorability ranking climb to 50% and her 19% unfavorable rating was among the lowest. Her net favorable rating of 31 points is among the highest for candidates.

Of those polled, 31% mentioned hearing positive feedback about Haley, whereas only 13% recalled recent negative sentiments, marking one of the smallest negative response rates. With a total of 86% saying they had heard something positive or heard nothing about her, Haley had the highest non-negative news score.
