Former President Donald Trump is the frontrunner to secure the GOP nomination for president in the 2024 presidential election.
First serving as president after winning the 2016 presidential election, Trump may have improved the progress of the Republican party according to a new survey.
What Happened: Trump lost the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden, but continues to be well-liked by Republican voters and has dominated recent election polls ahead of the 2024 election.
Another survey showed that not only is Trump still well-liked, he may have played a role in voters within the party believing they are more cared about now.
A newly released Morning Consult poll showed the number of Republican voters who believed their party cares about them has increased since 2016.
In 2016, the poll found that 30% of Republican voters believed their party “cares about people like me.” Fast forward to today, and the latest version of this poll saw 39% answer yes.
Democratic voters were more likely to report that their party cares about them at 41%, but that figure is down from 43% in 2016.
The poll found that a higher percent of Democrats believe their party cares about poor Americans, middle-class Americans and supports small businesses. But, in the case of all three of these questions, support from Republican voters increased from the 2016 survey and Democrats voted lower in all three.
Here’s a look at the data, with 2016 percent in parentheses:
Cares about poor Americans: Democrats 48% (50%), Republicans 37% (30%)
Cares about middle class: Democrats 46% (47%), Republicans 42% (33%)
Cares about small businesses: Democrats 46% (47%), Republicans 43% (35%)
One of the areas of concern in the poll was 62% of Republicans saying that the party cared about the "elites," compared to 47% of Democrats who answered the same for their party.
Why It’s Important: The poll broke down respondents by race and saw Black voters, Hispanic voters and white Republican voters all say they believe the Republican cares about people like them.
Democratic voters for each race category saw the percentage of voters who believe their party cares about people like them go lower from 2016.
With the 2024 presidential election a potential rematch of Trump and Biden, the data points from the surveys in 2016 and 2023 suggest Trump may have done a better job uniting his party compared to the current president.
The big area of concern will be the votes that Republicans still favor the elites and rich people, an area that has often been criticized when it comes to Trump.
While the election is still over a year away, the potential rematch of Trump and Biden is the current expectation based on polls. Both candidates could look to criticize the state of their respective political parties over the past eight years.
