Chris Christie, a former ally of Donald Trump, is no stranger to receiving criticism from the former president and lately has been fighting back.

What Happened: Trump skipped the second Republican primary debate, which was held Wednesday night. The debate, which aired on Fox Business, a unit of Fox Corporation FOX saw several candidates criticize Trump for avoiding the public forum.

Christie was among the Republican candidates in the 2024 presidential race that used the debate to point out Trump’s absence.

“Donald Trump, he hides behind the walls of his golf clubs, and won’t show up here to answer questions like all the rest of us are up here to answer,” Christie said.

Christie went on to personally address Trump, saying that the former president couldn't resist watching the debate.

“You keep doing that? Nobody up here’s going to call you Donald Trump anymore, we’re going to call you Donald Duck.”

On Thursday night, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to criticize Christie.

“Do people realize that Sloppy Chris Christie only had an 8% approval rating when he was governor of New Jersey. His financial and economic results were even WORSE. In other words, he was TERRIBLE! Why would the great people of the USA want a Governor to run our very troubled Country, when he couldn’t even run his own State. Chris is a loser, he always was, and always will be. Very BAD for the Republican Party!” Trump posted.

On Friday, Christie took to Twitter, a social media network preferred by more people than Truth Social, to post his message.

“Nothing better than a fake tough guy hiding behind a failed third-tier social media site. On your watch: 52 miles of new wall. $7 trillion in new debt. Obamacare is alive and well. Lost to Joe Biden. Who’s the loser? Stop ducking me Donald,” Christie tweeted.

Christie shared a picture of the former president as Donald Duck in the post and a subsequent post.

Why It’s Important: Truth Social, which is set to merge with Digital World Acquisition Corporation DWAC, is the preferred network used by Trump. Since being unbanned on Twitter by Elon Musk, Trump has only posted one time.

A merger between the Trump Media & Technology-owned social media platform and Digital World Acquisition has suffered many setbacks and recently escaped a Sept. 5, 2023 deadline with another extension to get the deal approved.

Trump has skipped both Republican primary debates, and sources have indicated that he will skip the third debate scheduled for a Florida location in November.

“I’m up 56 points, so the Debates would seem to be a complete waste of time,” Trump recently posted on Truth Social.

Trump also used Truth Social to criticize Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and presidential hopeful Nikki Haley, who he now calls “Birdbrain,” "Lyin Mike Pence" and more figures in recent posts.

Trump held a 43-point advantage in the latest Morning Consult poll of Republican voters, getting 58% of the support. Christie ranked far behind Trump, with only 2% in the hypothetical poll of Republican voters.
