Zinger Key Points
  • A weekly poll from Morning Consult asks voters who they would pick in hypothetical 2024 election matchups.
  • The two presidential front-runners are tied for a fifth time in the last 11 weeks.

Voters could be picking between Donald Trump and Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election, with both candidates leading their respective parties. The potential match-up would mark a rematch of the 2020 presidential election, which was won by Biden.

Recent election polls have shown a potential close race for 2024. Here's the latest weekly national voter poll.

What Happened: President Biden and former President Trump have been the frontrunners for their respective parties ahead of the 2024 election for many months.

Trump holds a 53-point lead among the Republican candidates running for president in the latest Morning Consult poll. Trump's lead was 50 points or more for several consecutive weeks, which comes as multiple candidates have dropped out of the race.

The weekly Morning Consult poll asked registered voters who they would select in a hypothetical matchup of Trump versus Biden.

In this week's poll, Biden and Trump each received 43% of the vote. Ten percent of voters selected Someone Else and 4% selected Don't Know.

This marked a gain for Trump, who trailed Biden 42% to 43% in last week's poll.

By party, 85% of Democrats selected Biden and 87% of Republicans selected Trump for the hypothetical 2024 poll, marking a gain of one percentage point for each candidate.

The important Independent voters, who could decide the election selected their 2024 pick as the following, with last week's results in parentheses:

Biden: 34% (33%)

Trump: 37% (37%)

Someone Else: 20% (20%)

Don't Know: 10% (11%)

The poll also found 88% of voters who voted for Trump in the 2020 election are backing him again, up two percentage points from the previous poll. Eighty-three percent of Biden 2020 voters are also backing him again in the poll, which is the same total from the previous poll.

Why It's Important: This week's tie marks a change of pace after Biden was ahead last week and Trump had a lead the three previous weeks before that.

Over the past 11 weeks, Biden was tied with Trump five times, ahead of the former president three times and ranked behind the former president three times.

Before the last three months, Biden posted a lead of one to two percentage points in almost all the polls dating back to when polling began in December.

Recent polls have shown a much closer race between the two presidential candidates, with Trump sometimes taking the lead.

Biden recently saw his approval ratings hit record lows since taking office back in November.

The 2024 presidential election takes place on Nov. 5.
