Biden Holds 5-Point Lead Over Trump In Key Swing State: No Celebration Yet As Former President Gains 9 Points In 2 Months

Zinger Key Points
  • Seven key swing states could determine the winner of the 2024 presidential election.
  • Joe Biden won six of the seven swing states in the 2020 election, including five that were won by Donald Trump in the 2016 election.

A new poll in Pennsylvania shows President Joe Biden with a strong lead over GOP nominee and former President Donald Trump — a sharp contrast to other swing-state polls.

What Happened: A poll from Susquehanna Polling, shared by Penn Live, shows the following for a head-to-head matchup between the two top candidates, with results from the same poll in January in parentheses.

  • Joe Biden: 50% (47%)
  • Donald Trump: 45% (36%)
  • Undecided/Don't Know: 5% (17%)

Biden currently enjoys a five-point lead and 50% of the vote.

However, Trump — whose first criminal trial is set for April 15 — gained more support than the current president over the last two months among Pennsylvania voters.

"Trump HAS to match or exceed his 2016 margins in conservative areas of the Commonwealth in order to win, especially because Biden's lead in the collar counties around Philadelphia is even larger than what he won this same area by in the past," Susquehanna President James Lee said.

Some 39% of Pennsylvania voters approve of the job Biden is doing as president. Fifty-five percent of voters disapprove.

Why It's Important: Candidates consider Pennsylvania a key battleground state for the 2024 presidential election.

The local Democratic Party recently opened 14 offices across the state. The last one will open in Philadelphia on March 30, according to the Pennsylvania Capital-Star.

A Pittsburgh office opened on March 23.

The commonwealth has 19 electoral votes. It’s tied for fifth with Illinois and trails only California (54), Texas (40), Florida (30) and New York (28).

Pennsylvania elected a Democratic presidential candidate in every election since 1992, with 2016 and Trump the lone exception. Before that stretch, the Keystone state voted for Republican presidential candidates in three straight elections (1980, 1984, 1988).

The other six swing states for the 2024 election are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, and Wisconsin.

Biden won six of the seven swing states in 2020. Twice-impeached Trump won North Carolina.

Five of the six swing states won by Biden were previously states that voted for Trump in the 2016 election, including Pennsylvania.
