The 2024 presidential election is less than seven months away, and Predient Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are the presumptive nominees.

According to the latest poll results, a potential rematch between the two candidates has been viewed as a tight race.

What Happened: The newest Morning Consult 2024 election poll of nationally registered voters shows a tie between Biden and Trump. Here are the latest results, with the results from the April 21 poll in parentheses.

  • Biden: 42% (42%)
  • Trump: 42% (42%)
  • Someone Else: 10% (10%)
  • Don't Know: 6% (6%)

Of Democratic voters polled, 86% chose Biden as their top pick. That’s one percentage point from the previous poll. Of Republican voters polled, 88% chose Trump as their top pick — in-line with the previous poll.

Independent voters, who could decide the election, selected their 2024 picks as follows, with the April 21 results in parentheses:

  • Biden: 34% (34%)
  • Trump: 36% (34%)
  • Someone Else: 18% (21%)
  • Don't Know: 11% (11%)

Why It's Important: Trump dominated the head-to-head poll against Biden in January and February. But Biden narrowed the gap in March and April and posted a lead over Trump on several occasions.

The new poll shows a high number of voters are still undecided about the election or are considering voting for someone other than the two leading candidates.

After being tied in support with Trump for the Independent vote, Trump now has a two-point lead over the current president.

Trump also leads in six of the seven swing states in a recent Morning Consult poll (Biden carried Michigan). Trump gained support in five of the states and could be adding to his lead in the key battleground states.

Trump's net favorability rating increased to minus two points. The rating is the share of voters who have a favorable view of Trump minus the share with an unfavorable view of the former president. While the figure was negative, it marked the highest rating for Trump since early December.

Morning Consult also reported that the net favorability rating for Trump is up 11 points since a low was reached in January. The climb in the rating comes as Trump is taking part in a criminal trial related to alleged hush money payments.

Meanwhile, a recent Marist poll that breaks out likely voters from registered voters shows Biden leading Trump 50 to 48 (+2) with registered voters, and 52 to 47 (+5) with "definite" or likely voters.
