President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to the 2024 presidential election this week, stating in a letter to Democrats that he is the right candidate to defeat Donald Trump.
Election polls indicate a close race between Biden and Trump, but President Biden is quickly losing support as Democratic members of Congress urge him to step aside.
What Happened: Betting odds and prediction markets show Trump having a wide lead over Biden, with some instances even suggesting that Vice President Kamala Harris has a better chance of defeating Trump and winning the Democratic nomination for the 2024 election.
A new Morning Consult poll of nationally registered voters shows Trump growing his lead over Biden in the weeks after the first 2024 presidential debate.
The new poll shows the following results, with the results from the July 2 poll in parentheses:
- Joe Biden: 42% (43%)
- Donald Trump: 44% (44%)
- Someone Else: 9% (8%)
- Don't Know: 5% (5%)
Of the Democratic voters polled, 85% have Biden as their top pick. That's down two percentage points from the previous poll. Ninety percent of Republican voters polled have Trump as their top pick, which is up one percentage point from the previous poll.
Independent voters, who could decide the election, selected their 2024 pick as follows, with the July 2 results in parentheses:
- Joe Biden: 33% (33%)
- Donald Trump: 36% (37%)
- Someone Else: 19% (18%)
- Don't Know: 12% (12%)

Why It's Important: After the first presidential debate, Biden has lost support from voters in the Morning Consult weekly polls.
Biden was either ahead or tied with Trump for several weeks leading up to the first debate but fell behind in the polls afterward.
Along with trailing Trump by two points, the latest poll also shows plenty of concern for the president's campaign.
After having a better net favorability rating for nine straight weeks, Biden now trails Trump. Biden's recent streak was his longest, dating back to April 2023.
Biden also has a lower net buzz rating than Trump, which is ranked by the percent of voters who heard something positive about a candidate and the percent of voters who heard something negative about a candidate.
Voters were 42 points more likely to have heard something negative about Biden than something positive in the last week (63% to 18%). This marks the worst buzz for Biden since tracking began in November 2022.
"Of all the post-debate data I've seen, it's Biden's net buzz numbers from our last two surveys that are the most jarring," Morning Consult said in the recent report.
Biden has trailed Trump in the net buzz rankings for two straight weeks, which are the only weeks he has trailed Trump since tracking began.
To put the latest net buzz figure into perspective, Morning Consult said Biden's -42 points are similar to Trump’s rating when he was indicted on election-related charges in Georgia in August 2023.
