Elon Musk Once Said That Second-Term Trump Would Be 'Too Old To Be Chief Executive Of Anything'

Zinger Key Points
  • Despite endorsing him, Elon Musk once said Trump by his second term would be "too old to be chief executive of anything."
  • Trump is the oldest presidential nominee in United States history.

Elon Musk has endorsed former President Donald Trump in the 2024 U.S. presidential race — donating tens of millions of dollars to a pro-Trump PAC — even though he once used strong language arguing against a second Trump term.

What Happened: Musk was vocally against a second Trump term in 2022, appearing to support Florida Governor Ron DeSantis before he sputtered out of the 2024 race.

“Trump would be 82 at end of term, which is too old to be chief executive of anything, let alone the United States of America,” Musk wrote on X. Musk did not own the platform at the time.

“I don't hate the man, but it's time for Trump to hang up his hat & sail into the sunset.”

Why it Matters: At 78 years old, Trump is the oldest presidential nominee in the history of the U.S. If elected, the former president would be 82 years old by the end of his second term, older than President Joe Biden is now.

Biden dropped out of the race as voters expressed concerns about his age and supposed rapid cognitive decline.

“Our brains shrinks over time as we age and when you see the brain of someone with severe dementia, the damage is not subtle,” Musk posted on X, two days before endorsing the septuagenarian Trump.

Trump has been subject to his own set of gaffes on the campaign trail, including confusing Nikki Haley with Nancy Pelosi.

Musk’s endorsement of Trump has perplexed many observers — including Bloomberg’s Mark Gongloff — given the latter’s support for fossil fuels, record of electric vehicle skepticism and opposition to EV tax credits. Musk is the largest shareholder of Tesla Inc.
