Trump Vs. Harris: 2024 Presidential Election Candidates Agree To Sept. 10 Debate, Could More Faceoffs Be On The Horizon?

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris will take part in a presidential debate Sept. 10, less than two months before the 2024 election.

What Happened: A battle over when and where Trump and Harris will hold presidential debates is getting closer to being hashed out.

Trump and Harris have agreed to a Sept. 10 presidential debate hosted by ABC, which is owned by The Walt Disney Company DIS. ABC and the date of Sept. 10 were originally agreed upon when Trump was facing President Joe Biden in the 2024 election.

Trump recently suggested the debate was cancelled since Biden dropped out of the race. Trump also cited ongoing litigation against the media network as the debate host being biased against him.

Trump said he will participate in up to three debates against Harris, as reported by the Associated Press. The former president said ABC is one along with debates hosted by Fox Corporation FOXFOXA and Comcast Corporation CMCSA unit NBC.

All three proposed debates would take place in September according to the report with Harris' campaign not yet confirming her participation in the Fox or NBC hosted events. Fox previously proposed a date of Sept. 17 for a debate.

Details have not emerged on what Trump and Harris have agreed on for the debate, with Trump likely pushing for a live studio audience, after this was not part of the original agreement between himself and Biden.

ABC is expected to simulcast the debate, allowing other media networks to air their stream with watermarks, similar to what CNN did with the first 2024 presidential debate.

Why It's Important: The first 2024 debate was watched by 47.9 million people and set records for Warner Bros. Discovery WBD, which owns CNN. The debate also marked one of the turning points of the election as it led to calls for Biden to step down after a poor performance.

While the first debate set records for CNN, it had lower viewership than the first presidential debates of 2016 and 2020.

Harris recently pushed back against Trump’s claim that he is willing to debate “any time, any place” in her recent comments about the presidential debates.

“Donald, I do hope you’ll reconsider meeting me on the debate stage,” Harris recently said. “If you’ve got something to say, say it to my face.”

With the 2024 election less than three months away, voters may be excited about the notion of Trump and Harris facing off head-to-head in a debate for the first time.

Viewership for a debate between Harris and Trump could come in higher than the first debate as the two candidates remain close in election polls and voters are eager to see them take each other on while on stage.
