Harris In Trouble? Poll Shows Most Won't Watch DNC, Signals Challenge For Dem Candidate

Zinger Key Points
  • Benzinga readers don't plan on watching the 2024 Democratic National Convention according to a new poll.
  • For those watching, a focus on Harris' acceptance speech and her key plans for presidency remain in focus.

The 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) will officially welcome Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party nominee in the 2024 election, but most voters won't watch the four-night event.

What Happened: A Benzinga poll found that while the DNC may be a big deal for Harris and Democratic leaders, the majority of our readers are “not interested.”

"Are you planning to watch the Democratic National Convention (DNC) this week?" Benzinga asked.

The results were:

  • Yes, for the first time: 11%
  • Yes, I've watched before: 21%
  • No, not interested: 68%

The first night of the DNC kicked off Monday and included a surprise appearance by Harris along with keynote speeches from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Joe Biden.

Clinton and Biden both shared passing-the-torch moments by celebrating how Harris will continue the legacy of female presidential candidates and run against former President Donald Trump.

Did You Know?

Why It Matters: Harris will accept the party's nomination on Thursday and could provide more details on her accomplishments and future initiatives as president.

Benzinga also asked: "Do you think Kamala Harris' acceptance speech will provide valuable insight into her and her policies?"

The results were:

  • Yes: 38%
  • No: 62%

Harris recently laid out plans for her presidency in a speech delivered in Raleigh, North Carolina. She emphasized improving life for the middle class by:

  • Lowering food prices
  • Making homeownership more affordable
  • Expanding the earned income tax credit and
  • Raising the child tax credit

An "opportunity economy," Harris said, is one where everyone can thrive and not worry about rising costs and homeownership being out of reach.

What’s Next: While Benzinga readers may not be interested in tuning into the DNC, a key upcoming event for potential strong viewership will be the presidential debate between Harris and Trump on Sept. 10.

The debate, hosted by ABC News, will be the first of several likely debates between the two presidential candidates.
