Is Joe Biden Joining TikTok: How The Move Could Help With 2024 Election, Cause Controversy With Calls To Ban App

Zinger Key Points
  • Social media platforms could be important in the 2024 presidential election, particularly with younger voters.
  • Joe Biden's team is considering joining the social media platform TikTok, according to sources.

President Joe Biden is 80 years old and his age has been one of the question marks ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

In a push to appeal to younger voters, Biden may be turning to a newer social media platform.

What Happened: Biden currently trails Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump in election polls and could face an uphill battle in the important swing states, according to recent polls.

To combat the decline and reach a younger audience, Biden's campaign is weighing a decision to join the social media platform TikTok, according to a report from Axios.

TikTok, known for its short-form video content, has been one of the most popular social media platforms for a younger audience, some of whom are not of voting age yet.

A decision to join TikTok could prove to be controversial if the president decides to take the plunge. Calls to ban TikTok from the U.S. over security concerns due to the platform being owned by Chinese technology company ByteDance have increased in recent years.

Several other Democratic politicians have used TikTok to reach a younger audience, while most Republican politicians are more against the platform.

Biden joining TikTok could come as the White House has worked to regulate the platform and banned it from being used on government devices.

Several Republican presidential candidates have promised to ban TikTok in the U.S.

The state of Montana signed a bill to ban TikTok from being used in the state, a decision that has now been challenged in court.

Why It's Important: Since 2018, TikTok has been a strong performer in downloads and usage among teenagers. The platform has over 150 million monthly active users, according to Axios.

Biden's age and that of Trump, who is 77, has been a big topic ahead of the 2024 election. Joining TikTok could give Biden an edge with younger voters.

Biden recently announced he was joining Truth Social, a platform owned by Trump Media & Technology Group. The media company is in the process of merging with Digital World Acquisition Corporation DWAC.

Along with joining Truth Social, Biden is also active on X where he has the @JoeBiden account and @potus presidential account, which has 37.6 million and 33.5 million followers, respectively.

Biden also used Instagram and Facebook where he has 19.4 million and 11 million followers, respectively. Both Instagram and Facebook are owned by Meta Platforms Inc META.

Social media is expected to play a larger role than normal in the 2024 election as more consumers get their news from various platforms and spend more time on social media than traditional media.
