US Stock Futures Signal Higher Start On Wall Street

US stock futures are higher this morning after the Memorial Day holiday. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 115 points to 12,543.00 and futures on the S&P 500 stock index rose 13.40 points to 1,343.40. Nasdaq 100 futures gained 25.75 points to 2,358.25. US markets were closed on Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. US stocks closed higher on Friday, with the Dow Jones industrial average gaining 0.31% to 12,441.58, the broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rising 0.41% to 1,331.10 and the NASDAQ composite index surging 0.50% to 2,796.86. The Case-Schiller home-price index for March will be released at 9:00 a.m. ET. However, the Conference Board's May consumer-confidence report will be released at 10:00 a.m. ET. Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation PVH is projected to report its Q1 earnings at $1.16 per share on revenue of $1.34 billion. Lions Gate Entertainment Corp LGF is projected to report its FQ4 EPS at $0.18 on revenue of $400.07 million. Optimer Pharmaceuticals Inc OPTR reported that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its antibacterial drug Dificid to treat Clostridium difficile. Columbia Banking System Inc COLB reported that its subsidiary, Columbia State Bank, has bought all of the deposits and almost all of the assets of First Heritage Bank from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Asian markets ended higher, with Japan's Nikkei Stock Average surging 1.99%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 moving up 0.90% and China's Shanghai Composite rising 1.36%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 2.16% and India's Sensex jumped 1.49%. European markets were higher today. The STOXX Europe 600 Index has gained 0.95%, London's FTSE 100 Index moved up 1.02%. The European Union is racing to draft a fresh bailout for Greece. Switzerland's first-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) increased 0.3% from the fourth quarter and 2.4% year-over-year. India's gross domestic product (GDP) increased 7.8% in the January to March quarter from the year ago period. Light crude for July delivery surged $1.45 to $102.04 a barrel in electronic trading on the Globex market. The euro gained 0.6% to $1.442 versus the dollar.
