Apple's 2025 AirTag To Feature iPhone 15's Ultrawide-Band Chip For Smarter, Longer-Range Tracking: Report

Apple Inc. AAPL is reportedly gearing up to launch a redesigned AirTag in 2025 with better tracking capabilities and range.

What Happened: In the latest installment of the weekly "Power On" newsletter, Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman said that the updated AirTag will feature a next-generation ultrawide-band chip, previously seen in iPhone 15.

This will result in AirTag 2 offering a range three times greater than the current model, which can be located from 10 to 30 meters away using Precision Finding.

In addition, the new AirTag is expected to include improved security features, to make it easier for users to locate items to which the AirTag is attached.

Why It Matters: The much-anticipated 2025 AirTag redesign comes amid ongoing discussions about the device’s security and privacy implications.

Earlier this year, Apple faced a lawsuit alleging that AirTags were being misused by stalkers. The lawsuit, which Apple failed to dismiss, highlighted concerns about the potential misuse of the tracking device.

In response to such concerns, Apple has been working on improving the security features of its AirTags. The upcoming model is expected to address these issues.

However, AirTags have also proven effective in various situations, such as aiding in the recovery of stolen items.

Last month, Apple also introduced a feature allowing users to share the location of lost items with third parties, such as airlines, through the Find My app.
