Trump Dominates South Carolina Poll - Beating State's Former Governor AND Current Senator

Zinger Key Points
  • A poll for the state of South Carolina shows Trump with a commanding lead among Republican candidates.
  • A close second place battle was seen helped by a candidate with a home field advantage.

A new poll of Republican voters is showing strong support for former president Donald Trump in the 2024 election. Here are the results of the poll and how other candidates could impact Trump’s odds.

What Happened: Seeking to once again be the president of the United States after losing the 2020 election, Trump announced his candidacy for the 2024 election back in November 2022.

The former president faces several challengers who have announced official campaigns, including Nikki Haley, Asa Hutchinson and Vivek Ramaswamy. Trump also could face several challengers for the Republican nomination from a handful of candidates who have not officially announced, but are exploring potential 2024 campaigns.

A new survey from National Public Affairs, a national consulting firm, asked residents of South Carolina who they would vote for if the 2024 Republican primary was held today.

Here are the results:

  • Donald Trump: 43%
  • Ron DeSantis: 21%
  • Nikki Haley: 19%
  • Tim Scott: 7%
  • Mike Pence: 1%
  • Vivek Ramaswamy: 1%
  • Mike Pompeo: 1%
  • Asa Hutchinson: 1%
  • Undecided: 6%

In the poll, three candidates received over 10% of the vote with Trump, DeSantis and Haley besting the other candidates. Trump led with a 2:1 margin over DeSantis, which comes even after his recent indictment and arrest.

Ranking fourth in the poll is Tim Scott, a U.S. Senator from South Carolina, serving in Congress since 2013. Scott was appointed to Congress by Haley, who previously served as the Governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017.

The poll shows that the two candidates with state ties faring well, but still sharply behind Trump and battling it out with DeSantis for second place.

Results of the poll also show an intent to vote, with Trump getting 67% of those asked if they would consider voting for him. DeSantis got 66% of the vote consideration in the poll.

The poll showed that while DeSantis has 21% of the overall vote, he could see the total rise as others drop out or say they are not running.

Why It’s Important: The results of the South Carolina poll come in contrast to some recent polls like those of Pennsylvania and Arizona voters that show DeSantis favored among Republicans in those states.

The indictment and arrest of Trump has done little to slow his momentum as a top candidate among Republican contenders in the 2024 election.

Results of many polls have shown a potential blockbuster matchup between Trump and DeSantis for the GOP nomination. Polls in the past have shown that as more candidates enter the race, it could lower the odds for DeSantis and lead to Trump once again winning a crowded field, as he did in the 2016 election.

DeSantis was recently in Washington, D.C. to drum up the support of Republican members of Congress ahead of his anticipated announcement of a presidential campaign.

Haley was one of the first candidates to announce a campaign for the 2024 election. Her 19% of the vote is a strong showing in her home state, compared to other states, but could also indicate a lack of being a clear challenger to Trump. The same could be said for Scott, who has not officially announced his candidacy and has not been seen as a high ranker in polls or the betting odds.
