The trial date for the prosecution of former President Donald Trump's classified documents case is set for Aug. 14.

U.S. District Judge Aileen M. Cannon, who is presiding over the case, has experienced delays in previous cases.

Cannon is also under scrutiny for disrupting the investigation into Trump's possession of confidential documents, only to be overturned by a conservative appeals court.

Trump and his aide Walt Nauta were both indicted on June 8.

Federal prosecutors, led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, allege the 45th U.S. president obstructed investigators and shared classified information with visitors to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. 

It is speculated that Trump may seek to delay the trial, since he still doesn't have a legal team after his attorneys resigned.

The trial dates may coincide with the Republican primary debates. Trump is the GOP frontrunner for the 2024 presidential election.
