Biden Increases Lead Over Trump And DeSantis In Latest Head-To-Head Poll

Zinger Key Points
  • President Joe Biden remains the frontrunner over Trump and DeSantis in a leading national poll.
  • Trump passed Biden for the first time in the same poll three weeks ago, but has lost ground since.

The 2024 presidential election could see a rematch of the 2020 election, which saw Donald Trump and Joe Biden face off. Biden ultimately won the election and became the 46th president of the U.S. in January 2021.

A new poll showed Biden continues to lead in a hypothetical race against Trump and another GOP frontrunner ahead of the 2024 election.

What Happened: Trump, Biden and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have been viewed as the frontrunners in the 2024 election for months. The betting odds have favored these three candidates to become the next president of the U.S.

In the latest Morning Consult poll, Biden had a lead over both Trump and DeSantis in hypothetical matchups against Trump and DeSantis.

A national poll asking registered voters who they would vote for in the 2024 election if it was Trump versus Biden had the current president getting 43% of the vote and Trump receiving 41%. Eleven percent said they would vote for someone else and 5% said they were unsure who they would select.

The weekly poll saw Biden gain from last week where he had a 43% to 42% lead. Three weeks ago, Trump briefly overtook Biden in the hypothetical matchup with a 44% to 41% lead in the potential rematch. This marked the first time Trump ranked ahead of Biden since polling began in December 2022.

In a hypothetical matchup between Biden and DeSantis, Biden came out on top, getting 43% of the vote versus the 39% for the Florida governor. Biden’s lead drops from 5% in last week’s poll to 4% for the week. Eleven percent of respondents said they would vote for someone else and 7% were unsure who they would vote for. Three weeks ago, Biden had a 2% margin lead over DeSantis in the hypothetical matchup.

Why It’s Important: The 2020 election saw Biden defeat Trump with a 306 to 232 margin in the Electoral College. Biden also won the popular vote with 51.3% support, compared to 46.9% for Trump.

Trump continues to dominate the GOP field in recent polls with the latest Morning Consult poll showing a 55% to 20% lead over DeSantis. The former president has enjoyed a 30- to 40-point lead over his next closest rival for many months.

The latest national poll data suggests that Biden maintains the favorite to win the 2024 presidential election, regardless of who he faces from the Republican party.

One poll saw Trump pass Biden and DeSantis narrow the margin, but it appears to be a one-off until either can get close to passing the current president again.

In June, Biden saw his approval rating hit his highest since August 2021.
