One of the most prominent figures related to former President Donald Trump is exploring a run for a political position in the 2024 election.
Unlike Trump, who is seeking a return to the role of president, Michael Cohen’s new focus could center on Congress.
What Happened: Serving as Trump’s attorney for over a decade has made Cohen one of the most prominent figures in the president’s legal proceedings and indictments.
After serving as the attorney for Trump from 2006 to 2018, Cohen has now spoken out against the former president and served as a key witness in the hush money case related to adult actress Stormy Daniels, which led to the first of three indictments for Trump.
Since serving as Trump’s attorney, Cohen also served a year in prison before being released early and finishing a sentence under house arrest. Cohen was convicted of fraud and perjury charges previously.
Cohen might have his eyes set on a run for Congress, according to a report from Semafor.
“I am interested and there’s a multitude of folks encouraging me to run,” Cohen told Semafor.
The former Trump attorney would run as a Democrat and could challenge U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY).
Nadler has served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing the state of New York since 1992. Nadler is also a top member of the Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee.

Why It’s Important: Along with his legal career, Cohen has some political experience as well, working on several campaigns and even running in several elections.
Cohen ran as a Republican in the New York City Council race in 2003 at the request of Gov. George Pataki, but lost in the election. Cohen also ran for a seat in the New York State Senate but dropped out after only a few weeks in the race.
News of a potential Congressional race by Cohen came as the former president and his former lawyer have been engaged in several legal battles. Cohen reached a settlement with the Trump Organization over unpaid legal bills earlier this year.
Trump also filed a $500 million lawsuit against his former lawyer accusing him of breaching attorney-client confidentiality privileges.
While Cohen has not officially announced a Congressional race, it could become an item of interest for the political sector given Trump will likely speak out against the race and could support a Republican candidate running against him if Cohen is able to get the Democratic nomination.
Looking ahead, if Cohen and Trump both win their respective 2024 elections, it could set up having Trump’s former attorney serving in Congress against him while he’s president.
