Apple Inc.’s AAPL recent Vision Pro Audio Upgrade announcement has left second-generation AirPods Pro users in a technological quandary.
What Happened: On Tuesday, during Apple’s “Wonderlust” event, Tim Cook reiterated the Vision Pro’s scheduled early 2024 release with a price tag of $3,499.
Although no new features were explicitly revealed for the Vision Pro, the tech giant announced an intriguing revelation: the Vision Pro’s integration with AirPods.

The latest AirPods Pro, equipped with a USB-C charging case, can tap into 20-bit, 48 kHz Lossless Audio with ultra-low latency when paired with the Vision Pro.
However, this feature won’t extend to the existing second-generation AirPods Pro despite sharing the same H2 chip, potentially causing some frustration among users, according to Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman.
In his Power On newsletter, Gurman said that users may now contemplate investing in a new pair of $249 AirPods solely to access this capability. “
For the unversed, while the Vision Pro boasts built-in speakers, AirPods are a practical choice in scenarios like airplanes, providing additional noise cancellation and preventing any potential disturbance to fellow passengers with audio playback from the headset.
Why It’s Important: Netizens expressed disappointment in Apple’s decision on social media. Some were disappointed, having purchased their AirPods Pro recently, believing that the upgrade would require only USB-C compatibility.
Others questioned why Cupertino didn’t enable the feature, suggesting it might have been seen as a marketing opportunity. There was also a sentiment that Apple could have simplified matters by labeling it as a new version, avoiding confusion.
