China has expressed its readiness for a summit between President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden but has outlined four conditions that the U.S. must respect, a top Chinese diplomat revealed.

According to a report by Nikkei Asia, the announcement was made by Xu Xueyuan, deputy chief of mission of the Chinese Embassy in the U.S., during the annual gathering of the Institute for China-America Studies held in Washington.

Xu emphasized that each meeting between Xi and Biden has been strategic, aiming to clarify misunderstandings. She acknowledged the differences between the two sides but stressed that they also share substantial common ground.

The Chinese envoy highlighted that the foundation of the bilateral relationship is built on mutual respect. The four “core interests” or “red lines” that Xu identified are Taiwan, democracy and human rights, China’s political and economic system, and China’s right to development.

She further elaborated on the last point, underscoring that China wants to feel the U.S. welcomes a more prosperous China and argued against the perception that China has taken advantage of the U.S. to rise.

Xu also touched on the role of giant pandas in China’s diplomacy, hinting that Xi may promise new pandas if the Biden summit takes place.
