Incumbent Sen. Laphonza Butler (R-Calif.) has announced she will not run for a full term in 2024. Appointed by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, Sen. Butler filled the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s term. Her decision not to run brings renewed attention to Reps. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), Katie Porter (D-Calif.), Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), and Steve Garvey (R-Calif.).
According to a Business Insider report, the primary election in March 2024 is expected to be competitive. Lee, Porter, and Schiff are currently the leading Democrats in the race. Given the Democratic lean of the state, it’s likely the Senate race will be between two Democrats.
Recent Public Policy Institute of California poll data shows Schiff leading with the support of 20% of likely voters, followed by Porter with 15%, and Lee with 8%. The poll did not include Garvey.
Financially, Schiff has raised nearly $6 million in the third quarter of 2023, with a total of $32 million cash on hand. Porter has raised approximately $3.4 million with nearly $12 million cash on hand. Lee raised $1 million in the last quarter, with over $3.2 million cash on hand. Garvey’s financial disclosures have not yet been filed.
The outcome of the race could significantly shift California’s political power. Porter, Schiff, and Garvey are based in Southern California, while Lee is the sole candidate from the San Francisco Bay Area.
