Tom Emmer Steps Down From House Speaker Race Following Trump's Critique: 'I Killed Him'

Former President Donald Trump dealt a blow to Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.)’s bid for Speaker of the House this week, demonstrating his enduring sway in the GOP.

According to a Politico report, following Emmer’s nomination by the Republican Conference, Trump lambasted him on Truth Social as “totally out-of-touch with Republican Voters” and a “Globalist RINO.”

Emmer, the third-ranking House Republican, dropped out of the race shortly after Trump’s denunciation. His withdrawal marked the third time a nominee’s bid for the speakership was shattered, underscoring Trump’s ability to hinder, if not elevate, candidates for the position.

Emmer’s downfall was partly due to his own missteps. Despite Trump’s initial reluctance to interfere, Emmer’s post on social media platform X, which some interpreted as manipulating Trump’s words, sparked the former president’s ire.

As one Trump adviser noted, “The Twitter post from Emmer yesterday didn’t help.”

Trump had previously failed to secure the speakership for his preferred candidate, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), raising questions about the GOP’s ability to find a universally satisfactory nominee.
