Sandro van Kuijck, a YouTuber, converted his Tesla Model X into a mobile living space, living, cooking and traveling in it for a year across 49 U.S. states.
Kuijck initially experimented with living in his Model 3 during a road trip to Texas, reported Business Insider. However, after facing challenges like finding charging stations and sleeping comfortably in the vehicle, he upgraded to a larger Model X.
After six months, van Kuijck swapped his Model 3 for a Model X. He equipped his new EV with pillows and a portable kitchen, built from wooden drawers with an induction plate, toaster, blender, and electric kettle, all powered by a battery pack. The total cost of the renovation was around $1,200, including kitchen supplies.
Kuijck used the PlugShare app to find free charging stations and mastered sleeping unnoticed in the car. He typically parked at public chargers overnight, using privacy screens to keep the interior hidden.
The YouTuber funded his expeditions by working for delivery services like DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Amazon Flex. His most recent trip took him to Alaska, a journey he detailed in a video on his YouTube channel.
Despite enjoying the freedom his Tesla gives him, Kuijck admitted that there have been times when he felt unsafe sleeping in the vehicle, particularly in remote locations.
