Kim Jong Un's North Korea Expresses Disapproval Over Possible US Missile Sales To Japan, South Korea: 'Would Have To Pay For The Security Crisis'

In a recent development, North Korea has voiced its strong disapproval of the potential sale of U.S. missiles to Japan and South Korea. It has labeled the possible arms sale as a serious threat to regional peace and stability, and an instigator of a new arms race.

What Happened: The North Korean defense ministry issued a statement, broadcasted by the KCNA news agency, warning of increased measures to establish deterrence and respond to regional instability, which it blames on the U.S. and its allies, Reuters reported.

“We warn that the more the United States profits from indiscriminate arms sales, the more it would have to pay for the security crisis,” North Korea’s statement said.

The statement comes in response to Japan’s plans to procure 400 Tomahawk missiles from the U.S., marking Japan’s largest military expansion since World War Two. The Pentagon confirmed last Friday that the U.S. State Department has approved this potential sale, which is valued at $2.35 billion.

Furthermore, the U.S. has also recently announced the potential sale of Sidewinder missiles and Standard Missile 6 Block Is to South Korea.

The North Korean statement warned that the US would bear the responsibility of the security crisis resulting from these indiscriminate arms sales. This announcement coincides with North Korea’s preparations to launch a spy satellite, a move that South Korea is cautioning against, citing it as a provocation and violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Despite these warnings, North Korea has threatened to demonstrate “more offensive and overwhelming counteraction capabilities,” in response to perceived “military threats” from the U.S. and its allies.
