Former U.S. President Donald Trump called for a comprehensive makeover of the Republican National Committee (RNC) if the GOP keeps engaging in primary debates.
What Happened: Trump, in a Truth Social post, lobbied the RNC to conserve resources by not organizing low-rated debates and made unverified claims about voter fraud in the 2020 elections, The Hill reported.
"GREAT POLLS JUST RELEASED – BEST EVER! Harvard/Harris TRUMP 67%, DeSanctimonious 9%, Birdbrain 8%, Ramaswamy 5%, Christie – dead in the water, a total loser! TRUMP UP 7% to 10% on CROOKED JOE BIDEN," he said.
"RNC must save money on lowest ever ratings debates."
He concluded his post with a forceful demand, saying: “If not, REVAMP THE RNC, NOW!!”
The post by Trump also spotlighted a Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll illustrating that 67% of GOP voters would back him in the party’s primary, significantly ahead of other potential contenders. According to the same poll, Trump also leads President Biden by 48% to 41% in a hypothetical two-person race.
Why It Matters: Trump’s demand for an RNC overhaul comes in the context of his long-standing criticism of the primary debates, which he perceives as a distraction from the core objective of the GOP: defeating the Democrats.
The former President has consistently refrained from these debates, opting instead for alternative platforms. His campaign has also previously urged the RNC to discontinue the debates, asserting that they detract from the key goal of defeating President Joe Biden.
