Former federal prosecutor Andrew Weissmann criticized ex-President Donald Trump for his repeated social media attacks on the daughter of the judge overseeing his upcoming hush money trial in New York.
What Happened: On Thursday, Weissmann, during an interview on MSNBC, expressed his concerns about Trump’s behavior. He said "It is really important not to just normalize this," especially his attacks on the daughter of Acting New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan.
“So many people talk about predicting what would a Trump 2.0 administration be, and should we really think he's going to be a dictator and what will happen,” Weissmann said.
“And my response to that is, ‘You can look right now at what he's doing and saying.' And for people who are fair-minded, I would say, 'What do you say about somebody who attacks the daughter of a judge?”
“I mean, is there no depth to which he will not descend?” Weissmann asked. “It is so important to not get inured to what this is.”
Why It Matters: Trump initiated a verbal onslaught against Merchan’s daughter. Trump voiced his dissatisfaction on Truth Social, stating, "Judge Juan Merchan is totally compromised, and should be removed from this TRUMP Non-Case immediately. His Daughter, Loren, is a Rabid Trump Hater, who has admitted to having conversations with her father about me, and yet he gagged me."
Meanwhile, Merchan imposed a gag order on the former president, which barred him from making public statements about jurors, court staff, prosecutors, and witnesses in the case — but did not bar comments about himself or his family.
The hush money case is one of the many legal challenges Trump is currently facing. The trial date for this case has been set for April 15. This trial could have significant implications for Trump's political future. This marks the only criminal case against the former president set to begin ahead of the November general election. Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records related to an alleged payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Cohen has testified that he made payments to Daniels.
