Obama Heaps Praises On Tim Walz, Reacts To Minnesota Governor's Needle-Work Skills: He Knows How To 'Fix His Own Flannels'

Former President Barack Obama posted his admiration for Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on X, highlighting his leadership and unique flannel-mending abilities, ahead of Walz’s speech at the Democratic National Convention.

What Happened: On Wednesday, Obama posted his endorsement of Walz, who is set to speak at the DNC on the same day. The former president praised Walz’s leadership and made a light-hearted reference to his ability to mend flannels.

Obama said he loved Walz reacting to a picture of the Vice Presidential candidate mending a flannel shirt. “A man who knows what leadership looks like — and how to fix his own flannels,” said the former president.

Walz, a former teacher and football coach, has gained popularity among supporters for his down-to-earth demeanor. He has, however, been the target of Republican criticism over his portrayal of his National Guard service and personal story.

Why It Matters: Walz’s speech is part of the DNC’s third day of programming, focusing on “a fight for our freedoms,” including abortion access and other rights that Democrats aim to center in their campaign against Republican nominee Donald Trump, reported the Associated Press.

Obama criticized Trump during his DNC speech, calling his act “pretty stale,” while praising Harris as a leader who can offer stability and commending Joe Biden for putting “his own ambition aside for the sake of the country.”

Michelle Obama too criticized Trump for his divisive rhetoric, particularly his claim about "Black jobs," while endorsing Kamala Harris for the presidency. She remarked, “Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those ‘Black jobs?'” urging voters to support the incumbent vice president in the upcoming election.

This comes amidst a wave of support for Vice President Kamala Harris, who has tied a record-high lead over Trump in a weekly election poll.
