Allstate Corp ALL swung to a second quarter loss on Monday. Allstate reported a quarterly loss of $642 million, or $1.19 per share, versus a profit of $441 million, or $0.27 per share, in the year-earlier period. Its catastrophe losses surged to $2.34 billion, from $96.8 billion, in the year-earlier period. Allstate's revenue climbed 5% y/y to $8.08 billion, from $7.66 billion. However, analysts were expecting a loss of $1.46 per share on revenue of $6.63 billion.
Humana Inc HUM reported a 35% rise in its second-quarter profit and lifted its earnings outlook for the year. Humana reported its quarterly earnings at $460.3 million, or $2.71 per share, up from $340.1 million, or $2 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue came in at $9.28 billion. Humana's adjusted income came in at $2.50 per share. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $2.05 per share on revenue of $9.28 billion. Humana raised its FY11 earnings outlook to a range of $7.50 to $7.60 per share, up from its earlier forecast of $6.70 to $6.90 per share.
Loews Corp L reported a decline in its second quarter profit on Monday. Loews reported its quarterly profit at $252 million, or $0.62 per share, down from $366 million, or $0.87 per share, in the year-ago period. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.74 per share. Loews' total revenue surged to $3.54 billion from $3.49 billion.
Sohu.com Inc SOHU reported a 32% rise in its second-quarter net profit. Sohu's quarterly net profit surged to $44.27 million, from $33.45 million, in the year-ago period. However, analysts were expecting a net profit of $42.64 million. Sohu's earnings per share climbed to $1.10 from $0.82. Its revenue jumped 36% y/y to $198.7 million from $146.1 million, versus analysts' estimates of $190.8 million.
Honda Motor Co HMC reported an 88% decline in its quarterly profit and lifted its full-year outlook. Honda reported its April-June profit at 31.7 billion yen ($406 million), down from 272.4 billion yen, in the year-ago period. Honda now projects a 230 billion yen ($2.9 billion) profit for the fiscal year ending March 2012, up from its earlier forecast of 195 billion yen ($2.5 billion). Honda also raised its annual sales forecast to 8.7 trillion yen ($112 billion), up from its previous forecast of 8.3 trillion yen ($106 billion).
HSBC Holdings PLC HBC reported a 35% rise in its first-half net profit attributable to ordinary shareholders. HSBC's net profit jumped to $8.9 billion. Its net interest income climbed 2.4% to $20.24 billion and loan impairments fell 30% to $5.27 billion. Including dividends and coupons payable on other equity, HSBC's profit attributable to all shareholders surged 36% to $9.22 billion. Its pretax profit rose 3.3% to $11.47 billion. However, analysts were expecting a pretax profit of about $10.8 billion.
Acorda Therapeutics Inc ACOR released its results for the second quarter on Monday. Acorda Therapeutics reported its quarterly earnings at $0.01 per share. ACOR's revenue climbed 52.6% y/y to $65.3 million. Analysts were expecting earnings of $0.12 per share on revenue of $66.04 million.
Armstrong World Industries Inc AWI reported a rise in second-quarter net income. Armstrong World reported its quarterly net income at $37.9 million, or $0.64 per share, up from $26.8 million, or $0.46 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue climbed to $748.6 million, from $724.8 billion. On an adjusted basis, Armstrong's profit came in at $0.70 per share.
CNA Financial Corporation CNA released its results for the second quarter on Monday. CNA Financial reported its quarterly net operating income at $116 million, or $0.43 per share. It reported net income at $126 million, or $0.47 per share. Analysts were expecting earnings of $0.51 per share.
Porsche Automobil Holding SE POAHY reported a 59% surge in its first-half operating profit. Porsche's operating profit rose to EUR1.07 billion, from EUR675 million, in the year-ago period. Porsche's revenue climbed 19% y/y to EUR5.22 billion as sales surged 26% to 56,272 cars in the same period.
Air Liquide SA AIQUY reported an 11% rise in its first-half net profit. Air Liquide's net profit surged to 750 million euros ($1.08 billion). Its revenue climbed 9.2% to 7.12 billion euros.
