Analysts were expecting earnings of $0.85 per share. The company's net sales and other operating income surged to $22.87 billion from $15.7 billion.
Duke Energy DUK swung to a profit in the second quarter. Duke Energy reported a quarterly profit at $435 million, or $0.33 per share, versus a loss of $222 million, or $0.17 per share, in the year-earlier period. Duke Energy's adjusted net income came in at $0.33 per share. Its operating revenue climbed to $3.53 billion from $3.29 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.30 per share on revenue of $3.32 billion.
Entergy Corp ETR reported upbeat second-quarter earnings on Tuesday. Entergy's quarterly earnings rose to $315.6 million, or $1.76 per share, from 315.3 million, or $1.65 per share, in the year-earlier period. Its revenue dropped 2% y/y to $2.8 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $1.65 per share on revenue of $2.9 billion. Entergy affirmed its 2011 earnings forecast in the range of $6.35 to $6.85 per share.
Westlake Chemical Corp WLK reported a 42% rise in its second-quarter net profit. Westlake's quarterly net profit rose to $81 million, or $1.21 per share, from $56.9 million, or $0.86 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue surged 13% at $925 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $1.20 per share on revenue of $919.2 million.
Emerson Electric Co EMR released its results for the fiscal third quarter on Tuesday. Emerson Electric reported its quarterly profit at $683 million, or $0.90 per share, up from $585 million, or $0.77 per share, in the year-ago period. Its net sales surged 16% to $6.3 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.90 per share. The company maintained its full-year 2011 earnings forecast of $3.20 to $3.30 per share. Analysts projected full-year earnings of $3.27 per share.
Pfizer Inc PFE released its results for the second quarter on Tuesday. Pfizer's quarterly profit surged to $2.61 billion, or $0.33 per share, from $2.48 billion, or $0.31 per share, in the year-earlier period. Its adjusted profit came in at $0.60 per share. Pfizer's revenue declined to $17 billion from $17.1 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.59 per share on revenue of $17 billion. Pfizer continues to expect adjusted 2011 profit of $2.16 to $2.26 per share, versus analysts' estimates of $2.25 per share. It still projects to repurchase between $5 billion and $7 billion of its common stock this year.
IPG Photonics IPGP reported better-than-expected second quarter results and issued upbeat Q3 projections. IPG Photonics posted Q2 income at $30.7 million, or $0.62 per share, up from $10.3 million, or $0.22 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue surged to $121.9 million from $67.3 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.55 per share on revenue of $108.3 million. IPG Photonics projects Q3 earnings of $0.56 to $0.68 per share on revenue of $120 to 130 million. Analysts were expecting earnings of $0.58 per share on revenue of $114.7 million.
NYSE Euronext NYX reported a 16% drop in its profits for the second quarter. NYSE Euronext reported its quarterly earnings at $154 million, or $0.59 per share, down from $184 million, or $0.70 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue rose 1% to $661 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.60 per share on revenue of $652.7 million.
MetroPCS Communications Inc PCS released its results for the second quarter on Tuesday. MetroPCS Communications reported its quarterly profit at $84 million, or $0.23 per share, up from $80 million, or $0.22 per share, in the year-ago period. However, analysts were expecting a profit of $0.28 per share. The company's total revenue climbed 19% to $1.21 billion, while adjusted EBITDA surged 11% to $357 million.
Rowan Companies Inc RDC released its results for the second quarter on Tuesday. Rowan reported its Q2 profit at $465.9 million, or $3.65 per share, up from $90.9 million, or $0.79 per share, in the year-earlier period. Rowan reported its Q2 net earnings from continuing operations at $44.4 million, or $0.35 per share, down from $83.4 million, or $0.73 per share, in the year-earlier period. Its offshore drilling revenue declined 21% to $223.5 million. However, analysts were expecting a profit of $0.34 per share on revenue of $280 million.
Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp CTSH reported a 21% rise in its second-quarter net profit. Cognizant's quarterly net profit surged to $208 million, or $0.67 per share, from $172.2 million, or $0.56 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue climbed 34% to $1.49 billion. Cognizant's adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.72. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.66 per share on revenue of $1.46 billion. Cognizant projects Q3 adjusted earnings of at least $0.76 per share on sales of at least $1.57 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.70 per share on sales of $1.54 billion.
NiSource Inc NI reported a 38% surge in its second-quarter net profit. NiSource's quarterly net profit rose to $38.9 million, or $0.14 per share, from $28.1 million, or $0.10 per share, in the year-ago period. Its gross revenue climbed 4.9% to $1.23 billion. NiSource's operating earnings from continuing operations came in at $0.17 per share. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.14 per share on revenue of $1.15 billion.
Becton, Dickinson and Company BDX reported upbeat earnings for the fiscal third quarter on Tuesday. BDX reported its quarterly earnings at $343 million, or $1.53 per share, up from $306 million, or $1.29 per share, in the year-ago quarter. Analysts were expecting earnings of $1.43 per share. Its revenue climbed 10% to $2 billion. Becton, Dickinson and Company also lifted its yearly earnings forecast to $5.65 to $5.70 per share, up from its earlier forecast of $5.55 to $5.65 per share.
OfficeMax Inc OMX swung to a loss in the fiscal second quarter on Tuesday. OfficeMax posted a quarterly loss of $3.02 million, or $0.04 per share, versus a profit of $11.8 million, or $0.14 per share, in the year-ago period. Its sales declined to $1.648 billion from $1.653 billion. Excluding store closing and other charges, OfficeMax's earnings came in at $0.07 per share. Analysts were expecting a profit of $0.01 per share on revenue of $1.63 billion.
Hyatt Hotels Corp H reported a rise in its second-quarter net income. Hyatt Hotels reported its quarterly net income at $37 million, or $0.22 per share, up from $25 million, or $0.14 per share, in the year-earlier period. Its adjusted earnings came in at $0.27 per share. Analysts were expecting earnings of $0.15 per share. Its total revenue surged to $936 million from $889 million. Hyatt Hotels' comparable revenue per available room climbed 5%, while select-service revenue per available room surged around 10%.
Kulicke and Soffa Industries Inc KLIC posted upbeat third quarter results, but issued downbeat fourth-quarter revenue projections. Kulicke and Soffa reported its quarterly earnings at $70.7 million, or $0.95 per share, up from $49.1 million, or $0.65 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue climbed to $294.4 million from $221.3 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.83 per share on revenue of $263.4 million. The company projects Q4 revenue of $155 to 175 million, versus analysts' estimates of $211.2 million.
Molson Coors Brewing Co TAP reported downbeat second-quarter profit. Molson Coors reported its quarterly profit at $222.8 million, or $1.19 per share, down from $237.2 million, or $1.27 per share, in the year-earlier period. Its adjusted earnings came in at $1.23 per share. Molson Coors' sales climbed 5.7% to $934 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $1.29 per share on revenue of $958.5 million. Molson Coors also announced its plans to repurchase $1.2 billion in stock over the next three years.
Coach Inc COH reported a 4% rise in its fourth-quarter net income. Coach's quarterly profit surged to $202.5 million, or $0.68 per share, from $195.5 million, or $0.64 per share, in the year-ago period. Its sales surged to $1.03 billion from $950.5 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.65 per share on sales of $1.01 billion. Coach's revenue in stores open at least one year surged 10.1% in North America.
Tenet Healthcare Corp THC reported a rise in its second-quarter earnings. Tenet Healthcare's quarterly earnings surged to $55 million, or $0.11 per share, from $25 million, or $0.05 per share, in the year-ago quarter. Its total operating revenue rose 3% y/y to $2.4 billion. On a continuing basis, Tenet Healthcare's earnings came in at $0.08 per share. Analysts were expecting earnings of $0.08 per share.
HCP Inc HCP reported a strong rise in its second-quarter profit. HCP reported its quarterly profit at $228.8 million, or $0.55 per share, up from $85.1 million, or $0.27 per share, in the year-earlier period. Its revenue climbed to $488.7 million from $301.9 million. HCP's adjusted funds from operations came in at $0.77 per share. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.47 per share and adjusted funds from operations of $0.64 per share. HCP projects 2011 adjusted funds from operations of $2.63 to $2.69 per share, versus analysts' estimates of $2.15 per share.
Barclays PLC BCS reported a 38% decline in its first-half net profit. Barclays net profit dropped to 1.5 billion pounds ($2.45 billion). Barclays' pretax profit declined 33% to 2.64 million pounds. On an adjusted basis, Barclays' pretax profit climbed 24% to 3.68 billion pounds. However, analysts were expecting a pretax profit of 2.43 billion pounds.
BMW AG BAMXY reported a strong rise in its second-quarter net profit. BMW's quarterly net profit surged to €1.81 billion ($2.56 billion), from €834 million, in the year-earlier period. Its revenue climbed 17% to €17.89 billion. However, analysts were expecting a net profit of €1.59 billion on sales of €18.3 billion.
Toyota Motor Corp TM reported a 99.4% decline in its Q1 net income and raised its annual earnings outlook. Toyota's quarterly net income dipped to 1.16 billion yen ($15 million), from ¥190.47 billion, in the year-ago period. The company posted an operating loss of 108 billion yen ($1.4 billion), versus a 211.7 billion yen profit, in the year-ago period. Its revenue dropped 29.4% to ¥3.441 trillion. Toyota now projects an annual profit of 390 billion yen ($5.1 billion), up from its earlier forecast of 280 billion yen ($3.6 billion). It also raised its annual sales forecast to 19 trillion yen ($247 billion), from 18.6 trillion yen ($242 billion).
BNP Paribas SA BNPQY reported downbeat Q2 net profit. BNP Paribas reported its quarterly net profit at €2.13 billion ($3 billion), after taking a €534 million charge linked to Greece, versus a year-ago net profit of €2.11 billion. Its revenue dropped 1.7% y/y to €10.98 billion, from €11.17 billion. However, analysts were expecting net profit of €2.09 billion on revenue of €11 billion.
Xstrata PLC XSRAY reported a 27% rise in its first-half net profit. Xstrata's net profit surged to $2.92 billion, or $1 per share, from $2.29 billion, or $0.79 per share, in the year-earlier period. On an adjusted basis, Xstrata's profit came in at $2.87 billion. Its revenue climbed 23% y/y to $16.78 billion from $13.61 billion. However, analysts were expecting adjusted net profit of $2.9 billion.
Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd FUJHY reported a rise in its net profit for the first quarter. Fuji Heavy's quarterly net profit rose to Y28.45 billion, from Y19.14 billion, in the year-ago period. Its sales fell 19% y/y to Y300.39 billion from Y370.29 billion. Its operating profit dropped 53% to Y10.67 billion from Y22.63 billion.
