It could be argued that there are too many emerging markets ETFs on the market today. Of course, if you're fan of this asset class, and who isn't, it can be argued that there aren't enough EM ETFs out there.
No matter what you're feelings about the amount of EM ETFs more are on the way, but if you're having a hard time picking a country-specific ETF, there's no need to fret because there are plenty of ETFs that will give you exposure to multiple markets within one fund.
Let's have a look at a few of the Professor's preferred picks among ETFs that will give you multiple-market exposure.
1) WisdomTree Emerging Markets SmallCap Dividend ETF DGS: The Professor is among the few in the ETF world that even talked about DGS this year, but this is a great ETF. Small caps, dividends and emerging markets all in one fund? That's a smart bet.
DGS allocates almost 20% to Taiwan, but South Korea, South Africa and Thailand all receive allocations of more than 10% making this an ideal ETF for the investor that just can't decide on a particular emerging market.
2) SPDR S&P Emerging Markets Small Cap ETF EWX:
Like DGS, EWX focuses on small-caps without the dividend kicker and like DGS, Taiwan gets the biggest weighting, but with EWX Taiwan accounts for almost 29% of the ETF's weight.
China gets just over 12% and South Africa gets a tad over 10%. India is the only other country allocation that is reasonably close to 10%. EWX isn't a bad play if you're craving EM small-cap exposure.
3) WisdomTree Emerging Markets Equity ETF DEM:
WisdomTree makes the list again with an offering the Professor isn't as impressed when compared to DGS.
DEM focuses more on large caps and that's fine, but telecom and financial services combine for almost 45% of the sector weight and Brazil and Taiwan account for 35% of the country allocation. No other country gets even 8%.
4) PowerShares Emerging Markets Sovereign Debt ETF PCY: With a yield of over 6%, we don't want to ignore PCY and let's not forget emerging market sovereign debt is far more lucrative than what Uncle Sam has to offer.
PCY's largest holdings include debt issued by Bulgaria, Colombia, Indonesia, Russi and Turkey.
